The story centres around two young brothers who are evacuated from London at the start of the war. They were billeted with a group of boys similar in age, at a Rectory in Southern England, where they are hosted by the Rector and his four young adult daughters. It relates the adventures that the characters experienced during their stay. Having hurriedly left their home in London, to escape from the Blitz. Jamie 10, and his brother Al 12, arrive at their Billet, an ageing Rectory in Southern England, where they now have to live with ten other young boys, in dormitory style accommodation. They are cared for by the Resident Rector and his four young adult daughters. Having to adjust to living with a mixture of boys from different cultures and religious views, presents a problem for Jamie, it finds him being challenged physically. Also his inquisitive mind leads him into several scrapes and adventures, both exciting and frightening. He manages to involve the other evacuees as well, and several of the boys end up finding themselves in sticky situations. Jamie eventually requires the assistance of his carers and the Law in his major coup.
